Spring, out here in Pittsburgh, is always an adventure. It might take awhile but the warm weather will get here. It always does. In the meantime, ask yourself when the last time you stained your deck was. There are few things better than sitting outside with your favorite beverage, a warm and glowing fire as you watch the summer sky turn to night. It’s truly relaxing. Perhaps you like to host some friends on Sunday afternoons for hot dogs and cornhole? Regardless, staining your deck will not only make it shine and look brand new, it will surely impress your guests too.
The perfect time to stain your deck
The weather is an important factor to consider when thinking about staining your deck. After all, the weather is the main reason you need to stain your deck each summer.. If you live in Pittsburgh, or in another climate where you experience all four seasons in one week, your deck has probably taken a beating from all the rain, snow, wind, and sun.
Depending on the size of your deck, you should plan for this to be at least a two-day project. Prior to staining, make sure all deck boards are up to par and that you’ve given them a good power wash. Here are things to consider:
- No loose boards
- No large splinters
- No rotting wood
- No nails sticking out
- A good power wash
- Applying a good deck cleaner
- Check and recheck that you’re ready to go and ready to stain
As far as when to actually stain the deck, there is no super clear answer. However, if you do it too early in the spring, be aware that the stain can peel and it will absorb moisture. Generally, there is more moisture in the spring, so play it safe by waiting for a nice sunny day where the temperature climbs above 80 degrees and there’s no rain in the forecast for the next three days.
How to stain your deck
Have you finished the prep work? Great, here’s what you’ll need to get started:
- Deck Cleaner
- Push Broom
- Sander
- Paint Brush
- High Quality Stain
Once you have all of your supplies, go ahead and begin staining your deck. Of course, make sure you remove all of the furniture from your deck beforehand, and sand down some of the damaged boards. Staining can get a bit messy, so make sure you cover surrounding plants with a plastic tarp. Sweep off your deck right before starting. Give the can of stain a good stir and then apply a thin, even coat using an extended roller. Thin coats typically work much better than one heavy coat. Make sure you’re using a brush for the smaller difficult areas. Once you’ve applied our first coat, repeat the process one more time. Then, let it dry thoroughly. You’ll be enjoying awesome summer parties out on your beautifully stained deck in no time.
