Color Trends for 2020
Sam Lutz • December 30, 2019

Are they bright and bold? Wild and wacky? It’s a thrill for our industry to learn what the latest “in” colors will be each year, and they never disappoint. The color trends for 2020 include shades of green, blue and pink, and each have an inherent welcoming quality.
Colors of the Year
The 2020 colors of the year have been selected by designers and paint manufacturers with a common theme in mind: cool colors are out and warm colors are in. We dive into the color trends for 2020 by looking at the colors of the year selected by some of the major brands available here at Ace.
- Benjamin Moore: BM was thinking “pink” when selecting the color for 2020. First Light 2102-70 is a soft, rosy shade that works well as a neutral hue. Andrea Magno, Benjamin Moore director of color marketing and development, explained that this color represents a necessary "shift in mindset from the material to satisfying the core needs in life: community, comfort, security, self-expression, authenticity, and ultimately, optimism.
- PPG: Chinese Porcelain, a calm blue, is PPG’s pick for a year dedicated to comfort in life. “This soothing blue imparts slowness, encouraging consumers to practice mindfulness and be more present in their lives, while also offering the spirit of hopefulness,” notes Dee Schlotter, PPG senior color marketing manager.
- Sikkens/Akzo Nobel: What’s more natural and soothing than the sky above us? Tranquil Dawn, a pale green-gray, is “reminiscent of the colours of the morning sky and encapsulates our desire to treasure our most human quality,” according to Heleen Van Gent, Creative Director Global Aesthetic Center. The color is featured in four different palettes under the theme of “the human touch,” which represent care, play, meaning and creativity.
Pink, blue or green? No matter your pick, your home’s new look is guaranteed to inspire comfort. But how exactly will you use these colors?
How Will You Use the Colors of the Year?
Don’t hesitate to start incorporating the color trends for 2020 into your home’s look. You’ll be the talk of the neighborhood with such a keen eye for the latest interior styles. Choosing the paint color is usually the hard part, but since that’s already done, let’s think about some tried and true ways to incorporate these hues.
- Benjamin Moore’s First Light 2102-70BM - Because it’s more subdued than traditional shades of pink, First Light is pretty versatile. The color is subtle enough to be used in a sunroom or bedroom as the primary paint color, and will feel more neutral than overwhelming. Pair it with bright white or beige furniture and decor and you’ll easily create a serene oasis.
- PPG’s Chinese Porcelain - While the color is warm and comforting, moderation is important. Chinese Porcelain is a deep hue, and with overuse it might begin to feel cold if used wall-to-wall. Instead, opt to use the shade on an accent wall or on your front door accompanied by white trim for a welcoming vibe.
- Sikkens’ Tranquil Dawn - The green-gray of Tranquil Dawn is soft and warm, making it an ideal wall-to-wall choice for any room. Try it in your living room or relaxing common areas to make your house feel a bit cozier.
From sunrooms to front doors, the 2020 colors of the year are versatile enough to meet your redesign needs. Embrace a welcome change in the new year.
