You’ve decided you’re going to do it yourself. You’re going to paint every room in your house and it’s going to be perfect. Painting isn’t all that hard, right? Maybe you’ve had success in your living room, or you painted the nursery before your firstborn came along. It’s certainly a task worth tackling, but you should do your homework to make sure you’re not falling victim to common mistakes people make when painting inside their homes.
They Weren’t Prepared
If you’ve been reading our blog for a while, one common theme visible in every painting related blog post is preparation. It’s crucial. If you just wake up one day and decide you want to paint your whole house, you shouldn’t just run to the store, grab a can of paint and a paintbrush and just throw it on the wall. There’s a process to follow and that process begins with preparation.
Preparation is key – whether you’re staining your deck, painting your kitchen, your bedroom or a cabinet. Here are a few tips to make sure you’re prepared for your next project:
- Relocate the room furniture
- Dust the walls and and give them a good scrubbing with a laundry detergent water mixture
- Repair any random imperfections (Most can be fixed with a bit of sandpaper and some muscle)
- Choose a high-quality primer to help cover up any imperfections
- Grab some paint brushes, stirring sticks, a paint tray and a few rollers
- Cover the wall trim with painter’s tape

Quality and price are often proportionate. You probably don’t need the most expensive brush. But you definitely don’t want the cheapest brush either. The same goes with rollers, primer and paint. Make sure you’re not just going with the cheapest equipment. You’ll thank yourself when you don’t have to run back out to the store in the middle of your paint day.
They Didn’t Use Primer
What?! No primer? Primer is important. It doesn’t matter what color your wall was before you decided it was time to paint. Do yourself a favor and throw a coat of high quality primer on there. It will help cover up those imperfections and the crayon stick figures you didn’t know your kids drew behind the couch.
They Didn’t Paint Top Down
When painting any room, starting from the ceiling down will give you the best results. This allows you to get the most out of your paint, and makes everything smooth. Be strategic and you’ll be pleased with the results. They Didn’t Use Painter’s Tape.
This one seems like a no-brainer, especially when painting near ceilings, doors, or cabinets. You may think you have the steadiest hand in the world, but it’s much easier to apply painter’s tape and then you won’t have to stress when painting the harder-to-reach places with your smaller brush.
