Beautiful Wood Stains are a Work of Art

Wood Stains on wooden furniture | Ace Paints and Unfinished Furniture Pittsburgh
One of the wonderful things about good wood furniture is that it doesn’t have to be merely functional. It can be beautiful as well. We’ve seen some amazing pieces made with wood stains that are more than just furniture, they’re works of art. So if you’ve got an old table, desk or other piece of wood furniture that needs jazzed up, why don’t you consider using some of our great stains to try one of these ideas.

Choose Your Wood Stain

Consider the kind of wood you’re using, the colors of the room you want to place the item in and anything else that feels relevant. And make sure to use wood that is ready to be stained, ie stripped, sanded etc. Woods like maple, mahogany, cherry and other rare and dark woods usually shouldn’t be stained. But if the finish of the wood was somehow damaged then you may want to consider some of this artistic staining.

They come in a variety of shades, colors and formulas, you can check out some of what we have online or in our store. Pick something that will compliment the wood color and grain as well as the room it’s in.

Draw on Your Furniture

That’s right, be a rebel. Use pencil for this part of the project. For your first project we’d recommend starting with something simple. Flowers, geometric shapes etc. Lightly draw the design with your pencil directly onto the wood. When you start using the stain keep in mind that the longer you leave it on the wood the darker it will be. If you want a lot of contrast on your piece go dark.

Apply Your Wood Stain

You can use a paintbrush, but our research shows that using a cloth over your finger to apply the stain creates a smoother and cleaner line. To have a truly beautiful effect you’ll want to have shading so you don’t want to fill the whole design with stain. Start heavy in the center and fade into the edges. You can also time yourself and wipe off different sections of the stain at different times for a more variegated look.

You also might want to mix different shades of stain for more variety, just make sure one is dried, wiped, etc before adding the next. You can create so many unique works of art and have furniture that is so specifically you. There are plenty of online tutorials to look for as well like this one and this one.
