Best Colors for the Dining Room
Picking the right color for your dining room is important. The right paint color will bring together the decor and make your dining room a fun and festive place to spend time at meals. At Ace Paint and Unfinished Furniture, we encourage our customers to give serious thought to the paint color they choose for their dining room. Remember that your holiday celebrations, birthday parties and cozy, homemade dinners will all focus around this one important room. Picking the right color for your walls can make meals and parties more satisfying and enjoyable.

What Color Makes You Hungry?

Some paint colors are actually known to make people feel hungry, while others make them feel less hungry. Colors that are peaceful and calming tend to relax the gastrointestinal system, ending meals before guests have gotten their fill. Dramatic colors, meanwhile, tend to excite the stomach, making people want to eat more. Colors that can encourage the meal to last longer include:
  • Red: Bold, deep reds are a classy, sophisticated color for the dining room. We recommend pairing red with white or cream, to offset the intensity of the color. Million Dollar Red by Benjamin Moore is an excellent example of a timeless color that can make your dining room the perfect place to eat in style.
  • Orange. Orange can be exciting and bright or rich and natural. One of our favorite shades for the dining room is Benjamin Moore’s Carrots, an autumnal color with deep warmth and rustic charm. Seeking something a little more peppy? Turn your attention to Orange Sky, a color with all the energy of a birthday party on a summer Saturday.
  • Yellow. If you’re looking for something a little more cheerful and happy, yellow is also known to excite hunger. In a large dining room, a Mediterranean color like Sun Porch can give your dining room a festive, cheerful character. In a smaller dining room, we recommend something a little softer and sweeter, like Banana Yellow.
Colors to Avoid

Colors to Avoid

If you’re trying to stimulate your guests and make dining a true event, we recommend avoiding soft or cool colors, like certain shades of blue, gray, green and purple. Soft shades can leave people feeling subdued, thus ending meals early. Of course, if you are set on painting your dining room in cool, calming shades, we recommend pairing these colors with dramatic, contrasting shades.
For example, combinations of gray and yellow have become very popular in recent years. Decorating your dining room in a gray and yellow theme can make dining fun and enjoyable.
