When you’re trying to redecorate your home, a fresh coat of paint can make all the difference. These quick home painting projects can make your interior decor pop without all the expense and time of a total room repainting.
Accent Wall
An accent wall is a wall that’s been painted a different color from the other walls in the same room. Accent walls don’t have to be a bold, bright color to stand out. If you’re trying to decide which color to use for your home’s accent wall, look for a color that appears elsewhere in the room. Usually the color used for the accent wall is a color that contrasts with or complements the main color that decorates the room.
Accent walls help tie together the room’s decor, making for a more cohesive interior design. Not sure which wall to paint? Pick the wall where the focal point of the room appears. In the bedroom, this would often be the wall behind the bed. In the living room, this should be the wall around the fireplace or mantel.
Stripe Around the Crown Molding
Painting a
stripe beneath the crown molding
in a room helps draw the eyes upward, giving your room lift and height. In small rooms, this can make the space seem more spacious and airy. Like the accent wall, we suggest matching the stripe to one of the accent colors located elsewhere in the room.
Paint the Baseboards and Window Trim
Colorful baseboards and window trim
can help the walls of your room pop! If you’re not sure what colors to paint your room’s trim, we recommend using a neutral color like brown, black or gray. This can add visual interest without creating a distraction from the rest of your room’s decor. If you’re not sure what type of paint to use for your home’s trim, we recommend using a satin or semi-gloss paint. Semi-gloss will help the trim standout while satin paint can be easier to clean.
Paint Half the Room
Paint the
bottom half of the room, up to a position around waist-height. Usually this paint color will be a contrasting shade that distinguishes the upper half of the room. If you’re feeling extra ambitious, install a chair-rail at a height of 1/3 of the way up the wall, then paint the wall a different color up to the chair rail. This sophisticated look is perfect in formal rooms like dining rooms.
Touch Ups
Paint touch ups may not be the most exciting home improvement ever, but they sure can make a big difference. Of course, it’s important to get paint that is as close as possible to the original color. If you have the original paint on hand, use it. If the paint is very old, check for mold and other problems before applying it to your walls.
If you don’t have the original paint, you can take a chip of paint to your nearest paint store, or use the
Benjamin Moore Color Capture
app to analyze the color and determine the closest match. Either way, we recommend testing the paint first by applying a tiny amount of the touch up paint to a hidden part of your wall. This way, you’ll know for sure if the paint matches before applying it to a more obvious place in the room.
