Fall Ready Front Porch

Fall is coming soon! With blustery winds, short days and falling leaves comes a great opportunity to spruce up your home’s porch. Adding fall decor can make your porch a sight to behold, while performing basic maintenance is important for ensuring that your front porch is able to withstand wet, cold fall conditions.
Spruce Up the Decor
Adding fall decor to your porch is one way to make your home inviting to guests, friends and members of your household. Below are a few decorative favorites we recommend to our customers at Ace Paint and Unfinished Furniture.
- Wreath. The wreath is a symbol of eternity, but in fall wreaths take on additional meanings. Harvest wreaths decorated with vegetables, leaves, fruits and flowers symbolize the bounty of the season, showing visitors that your home is a place of plenty.
- Signs. Make a simple “harvest” sign with leftover paint and a scrap of board, then place it on your porch in a prominent position. This simple project can help remind visitors of the natural activity that takes place on farms and in fields every year at this time.
- Garland of leaves. Draping a fall leaf garland over your door helps add color to your front stoop. You can make your own or purchase one from a craft store. If your front door features a wreath and your garland will be close to the wreath, try coordinating the colors on the two decorations to give your front door and the space around it a unified appearance.
- Cozy touches of home. Sitting on the front porch can get chilly in the evenings. Drape your porch swing or porch rocking chair with a throw blanket to make your time on the porch more comfortable and cozy.
Do a Little Maintenance
Peeling paint can leave your front porch vulnerable to the elements. To protect your porch, inspect the wood before the fall weather arrives. Look for areas where the wood is soft, discolored and bare of paint. These boards are rotten and will need to be replaced. If there are only a few places where paint is flaking off of the wood, this means it’s time to do touch ups. If the paint is peeling from large areas of the porch, it’s time to repaint. To do touch ups or repaint your porch, follow our tips from this previous post.
Landscape for the Season
Sprucing up your home’s landscaping around the front stops is another great way to draw attention to your porch. Fall blooming flowers like mums are an excellent way to add fall color to your property. Plant the flowers near your front steps or plant flowers in wooden planters, then place the planters up the steps to your front porch.
