Back to School Painting Projects
Sam Lutz • August 30, 2016

It’s back to school time,in Pittsburgh and all around the country. In almost no time at all, your house will be empty and quiet once again. If you’re a stay at home parent, now is the time to tackle all of those DIY projects that have been building up over the last few months. Below we’ve listed some of our favorite paint projects for around the house; take your pick! You’ve got 10 months to get done the chores and projects that have been building up.
Staircase
Staircases need to be repainted every so often because they get scuffed from heavy traffic. We just covered this topic in a blog post this month, so take a look here.Prepping the stairs is the most important part of this DIY project: you’ll need time to fill any holes in the stairs, sand down the surface, then apply primer before paint. Once the whole thing is done, a coat of poly will help protect the paint.
Front Door
Painting the front door is a good project if you’re thinking about selling soon, because a freshly painted front door adds a lot of curb appeal. The painting process you follow will depend on the material that the door is made from, so do some research before you get started. Metal doors
need to be chemically stripped of old paint before new paint is applied, whereas wooden doors can accept new paint over old (provided that the door is well sanded).
Furniture
Furniture painting rejuvenates old scratched up pieces of furniture and makes them like new. For best results, we encourage you to have fun and explore different methods with your painting process. Color washing wooden furniture
produces an antiqued, vintage look. Stenciling can help you match the furniture to other design elements found in the room.
Concrete Patio
Painting your concrete patio adds color and visual interest to an otherwise plain slab of hard, cold ground. Painting concrete
is a lengthy process that requires good weather, so we recommend getting started on this right away, before rain and cold weather makes this project unpleasant or impossible.
Getting Creative
Painting should be fun! It’s not just home improvement; it’s a way to express yourself. To personalize your home, get creative with your painting styles. Here are a few ways you can turn a normal painting project into an adventure.
- Paint stripes. Stripes on the wall add visual interest while disguising the dimensions of a room, which makes them a good addition in small spaces.
- Rag paint. Rag painting is a faux effect that makes walls look lush and velvety.
- Paint the ceiling in a wild color. Ceilings don’t have to be white! Explore your options before deciding on the right color for you.
- Add accent colors. Accent colors help pull your room together stylistically. Try painting the trim of your room in a color that sets off the dominant color on the walls.
