Fall “Deck”orating! Tips for Decorating Your Deck this Fall
Sam Lutz • August 23, 2016

Fall is approaching quickly! With the end of the summer, many homeowners are thinking about ways that they can decorate their outdoor spaces in fall decor. This tutorial will help you decorate your outdoor deck with fabulous natural colors and reminders of the harvest season.
Repaint in Fall Colors
This is the perfect time to repaint your deck, because repainting the wood seals and protects it from cold autumn showers. Reds, oranges, and yellows are common fall colors because this is the colors of the leaves when they fall from the trees. That said, there are many other colors in the spectrum that serve as natural reminders of the autumn season. Think of the gray clouds that you’ll see on rainy afternoons, or the steely blue of the autumn sky on a brisk, sunny afternoon.
To get really creative, we recommend painting your deck in two or more colors. The Benjamin Moore website has a list of pleasing fall color combinations. This website can be used as a resource for anyone thinking about painting their deck with fall colors.
Make a Fall Focal Point
Add a centerpiece to the table on your deck comprised of an electric lantern and a table wreath made from autumn-colored berries. Your fall focal point can be as elaborate or simple as you want, but be sure to incorporate reminders of autumn, like pine cones, acorns, dry leaves, and twigs. In the place where your deck connects to your house, consider adding a second focal point in the form of a large wall wreath.
Add Greenery
Autumn blooming flowers like sedum, helenium and asters can all give your deck the color and beauty it needs to stand out this autumn. Potted plants placed around your deck are festive, but be careful to keep the pots elevated on tables or stands. This will prevent water from collecting beneath the pots, thus contributing to the deterioration of the deck’s paint or stain. If potted plants aren’t quite to your tastes, consider planting flowers in the ground around the perimeter of the deck.
Have Fun With Squash
Squash is the quintessential symbol of the autumn season. Placing a few pumpkins on the deck’s steps, around the perimeter or on the furniture will give your deck the authentic fall look you’re seeking. To prevent your squash from rotting on the wood, we recommend using artificial squash until the cool weather arrives. Using real squash is only safe for the deck if the squash is elevated off the surface of the wood, like the potted plants. Put the squash on a stand, on a table or gathered around the base of the deck, with the potted plants.
