Older bathrooms can have many quirks. Brightly colored tiles, cramped spaces, a vintage toilet and more can all make your older bathroom something of an eye sore. In this post, we’ll talk about the best ways to spruce up your older bathroom to give it a more modern look and feel without breaking the bank or knocking down walls.
Repaint
Repainting your bathroom walls can refresh an old, gaudy bathroom. When repainting the room, the type of paint you choose is just as important as the color. Bathroom paint must be moisture resistant and easy to clean in order to be functional. There are several options you may chose – semi-gloss, satin, or matte. Semi-gloss has a nice shine that protects your bathroom walls, while satin paint is forgiving of imperfections in drywall and is also easy to clean. If you enjoy a matte finish, we suggest Aura Bath and Spa by Ben Moore. They are matte finish paints specifically for bathrooms and high moisture environments.
Paint the Tiles
If you’re really tired of the color of your bathroom tiles, remember that you can always paint them. Avoid painting tiles in high-moisture areas, like the shower or bathtub, but all other tiles in your bathroom can accept paint if it’s applied appropriately. Start by cleaning the tile thoroughly and removing all mold and mildew. Next, sand the tiles to give the primer and paint a rough surface to adhere to, then apply an epoxy or urethane bonding primer directly on the tiles. Although, there are very few primers for tile. Stix is an excellent, water based bonding primer that will adhere to ceramic, glass, and other common bathroom materials.
Upgrade the Towels
Old, mismatched towels can really detract from the look of your bathroom. Buy a set of good quality towels to put on display in your bathroom. Match the towels to the new paint on the wall to bring the bathroom together.
Add Some Artwork
Matching artwork gives your bathroom design an intentional quality that says, “I meant it to look like this.” Look for art that incorporates colors found elsewhere in your bathroom, and if possible, try to match the overall tone of the bathroom. If your bathroom already looks vintage, get some artwork that looks vintage to go with it.
Regrout
You’d be amazed at how clean and new your bathroom can look with a fresh application of grout between the tiles. To regrout, use a grout saw to scrape out the old grout, then mix new grout in a bucket. Finally, use a grout float to smear the grout on the tiles, and wipe away the extra grout with a rag. You can see the whole regrouting process here in this video:
Add Smart Storage
Some older bathrooms are just too small. Getting clutter up out of the way can make the room seem more spacious and inviting. To do this, you’ll need to install some smart storage. Open shelves placed up high can free up space on your vanity and beneath your sink. If you choose to use open shelves, hide your clutter in matching baskets or bins that look good with your newly painted walls.
