Everyone knows someone with a summer home. Whether it be on a lake, near the ocean or in the middle of the woods, many families cherish their summer escape. Even so, it can be easy to lose sight of your summer home upkeep when it comes to remodeling or updating. So, if you’re thinking about giving it a fresh look, be sure to read this first.
Exterior Paint Makes a Huge Difference
We’ve written numerous blogs on how exterior paint can really make a house pop and look fresh. The same goes for exterior paint. Even if you’re only there on the weekends it’s worth it. The nicer the home, the more you look forward to visiting. An added bonus? Depending on your summer home’s location, you can even rent it out when you’re not there through Airbnb. The nicer your home, the more you can charge.
When it comes to choosing exterior paint, go with something neutral – one of the classics. There’s a song about little pink houses for you and me, but does anyone really want a pink house? Probably not. Whether you go with an off-white, a light shade of yellow, or even a lighter shade of green or peach, it’s going to make your summer home look great!
One quick reminder:don’t just go out and buy a can of paint. Make sure you do your research – and all the prep work!
Go One Room at a Time
Renovations can be overwhelming, not to mention pricey. If you’re the DIY type with a smaller budget, doing one room at a time can help you accomplish your goals of renovating your summer home.
Start with the trouble areas first. For example, if you’ve been talking about updating the kitchen every summer for the past decade, then that’s a great spot to start. Once you get the kitchen looking the way you want, you can then move on to a living room, bedrooms, bathrooms, etc.
It’s not going to be an overnight process, but be sure to shoot before and after pictures for when you’re feeling like the project isn’t going anywhere.
Stick to Neutrals
Sticking to neutrals is especially important if you’re not going to be the only one using the summer home. If you’re renting it out, neutrals are a safer bet to make sure people are renting out your more conservative home than something wild and unique.
Also, some families share summer homes. If this is the case, it can be difficult to get everyone to agree on renovations. A neutral color can help keep the whole family happy.
Cabinets, Flooring and a Few Final Things to Consider
There are two major things we haven’t really mentioned yet in this post. First, the flooring, and then the cabinets. When redoing your kitchen, it’s important to make sure everything matches and flows.
Decide on some non-negotiables, such as a flooring material and design you really love, and then design around that. If you love the look of a specific set of cabinets, but also love a specific flooring that doesn’t quite match well, then your space is going to look a bit off. Renovation is a process. Mostly, a fun process, but definitely a process that needs to be followed.
