The weather is beautiful and it’s time to decorate your yard! At Ace Paint and Unfinished Furniture we get a lot of customers seeking supplies for with their outdoor paint projects, especially at this time of year. In this post, we’ll highlight some of our favorite paint projects for a warm spring day. Each project will give you something to do with the kids, leaving you with a nice token of your time together.
Painted Tin Can Planters
Tin cans make perfect planters for flowers and other outdoor plants. While 8 ounce and 16 ounce cans will work well for the smallest plants, larger coffee tins are better for bigger plants. Before starting your project, drill holes in the bottom of the tins to allow water to seep out the bottom and prevent the roots of the plants from becoming waterlogged.
Next, prime the surface of the tin can with metal primer. Finally, use any paint from around the house to paint your tin cans. Paint your cans with a colorful pattern or a beautiful scene, or let your kids apply large hand prints to the cans.
Colorful Rugs
Buy an inexpensive rug from your local home improvement center or dollar store. Take it home and paint patterns or words on the rug using exterior grade house or porch paint. You’ll need to apply multiple coats to ensure good coverage and to ensure the paint will stick to the surface of the rug. Make your rug vibrant, cheerful and welcoming for your visitors. The more colors the better!
Painted Tire Planters
Old tires make fabulous planters, and they’re easy to paint. To get started, clean your tire with a sponge and soapy water, or use a degreaser to remove sticky substances. Next, prime the surface of the tire. Finally, paint the exterior of the tire with an exterior-grade house paint or porch paint. Smaller tires can be hung from the exterior walls of a garage or shed as a decoration. To make the tire into a planter, simply fill the bottom of the tire with soil and then add cascading flowers that will grow over the side of the tire. Larger tires can be laid down on the ground and the center then can be filled with soil. These planters have a thrifty, homemade quality that is perfect for homes with rustic exterior decor.
House Number Painted Board
Paint your house numbers on a scrap of old wood, then drill a hole through the top of the sign and hang it from your front door with twine. You can decorate the sign around the numbers with a pattern, but be careful not to let the sign get too busy or the numbers may become difficult to read. This project is rustic and functional, and can replace old house numbers that are hard to read or in bad shape.
Decorated Rocks
Decorated rocks make charming, sweet decorations for outdoor spaces. Have your kids select several large, smooth rocks, then paint the rocks to look like bugs, animals or colorful suns. Don’t forget to seal the rocks when you’re done, to prevent the paint from chipping with time. Finally, disperse the rocks throughout your front yard or back yard garden to add a colorful decoration to the spaces between flowers.
