Create A Colorful Patio
Sam Lutz • May 9, 2017
Now that your yard is no longer covered in snow and mud, it’s time to spruce up your backyard patio. There are many ways that a simple can of paint can transform your patio into a vibrant, beautiful space to spend your time. In this post, we’ll discuss three easy paint projects that can revamp your patio this spring.
Paint the Patio
Unpainted gray concrete lacks character. Painting your concrete is the perfect way to make your patio pop. Concrete painting is a project that many DIYers can handle on their own. Here’s the process:
- Remove all furniture from the patio.
- Clean the concrete using a strong concrete cleaner like TSP. Follow all manufacturers instructions when using this kind of cleaning product.
- Spray the concrete with a power washer to remove all old paint.
- Cover the nearby landscaping with tarps.
- Paint the patio with concrete paint. Follow all manufacturers instructions on the paint when applying it to the concrete. Use a paint that contains a sealer.
- Apply a second coat of paint to the concrete after the first coat has dried.
- Wait for the paint to cure before using your patio.
Paint the Furniture
Refresh your old patio furniture with a new coat of paint. To get started, follow these steps:
- Remove all cushions from your patio furniture.
- Scrub the furniture with a stiff bristle brush and soapy water.
- Sand away all rust from the patio furniture. If there is a significant amount of rust on the patio furniture, you may need to use an electric sander.
- Rinse the patio furniture and allow it to dry.
- Lay tarps down on the area where you’ll be painting, then place the furniture on the tarps.
- Paint the furniture with a coat of exterior-grade spray paint. Give the paint time to dry, then apply a second coat.
- Wait for the paint to cure before applying a second coat.
Paint Faded Cushions
Patio furniture cushions have a way of fading over time. To get rid of this sun-bleached look, try painting your old faded cushions
with a can of spray paint!
- Clean your cushions with soapy water and a sponge.
- Allow the cushions to dry fully. Leave the cushions in a safe place, like your garage, while they’re drying. Do not leave the cushions outside where they can get re-dirtied or wet with rain.
- Lay tarps on the ground under the cushions.
- Spray the cushions lightly with a can of spray paint. Hold the can of spray paint well above the cushions to get a light even coat of paint.
- Allow the paint to dry fully.
- Turn over the cushions and paint the other side.
- Repeat steps 4 through 6 to apply a second coat of paint. Allow the second coat of paint to cure before putting the cushions back on your furniture.
