How to Texture Walls

While a new paint color can quickly bring life back to any room, some folks like to take it a step further. Textured walls add another level of interest to your aesthetic and make your space even more personalized. There are plenty of different ways to go about adding texture to walls, even a few DIY options!
As with most design trends, there are plenty of variations to suit your specific style or needs. Choosing the right wall texture can really enhance your room’s motif. Here are few of the most popular.
Joint Compound Method
This type of wall texturing might require a little bit of a time investment, but the result will be well worth it! You can really let your personality shine with this project. Start by applying drywall joint compound, or mud, to your painted walls. While this material is typically used for finishing off drywall, it also gives you a great “blank canvas” to work with.
The joint compound will ultimately scrape off, so don’t worry about using too much. After you apply it, it’s time to choose your texturing tool. Some popular methods include:
- Broom
- Squeegee
- Hair comb
- Paper Bag
- Sponge.
Whatever you use will be unique. Try googling different methods to see which you like best. This is a great option for adding visual depth to your walls.
The Stucco Look
Another way to add texture to your walls without breaking the bank is to create a sort of faux stucco look. This is a relatively easy process that even new DIY-ers can tackle. Using drywall mud again, apply to unpainted walls. You can do this by dabbing the wet mud onto walls with a sponge or a compound knife.
Stucco is all about uneven texture, so apply blotches along the wall for an authentic look. Once you have the framework of your “stucco” wall all set, apply your chosen paint color as you would on a flat wall. The end result is a perfect stucco look-alike at a fraction of the cost.
