Choosing the Right Accent Pieces for Your Paint Color
Sam Lutz • October 9, 2018
You’ve spent countless hours choosing the perfect paint color, masking the walls, priming, painting, and painting again. Now you finally have the space you’ve always wanted. But this isn’t the end of the journey. With every color in the rainbow comes a unique pallet. Your next step is deciding how to decorate around your new paint job.
What Colors Go Well Together?
Nothing can offset the beauty of a new paint color than decor and furniture that don’t quite match. When done correctly, your decor shouldn’t only harmonize with your wall colors, but enhance them as well!
The first thing to determine is what colors work well with others. Let’s go back to art class and revisit the color wheel. This handy device tells us which colors work well together. First, the primary colors: yellow, red and blue. Next, the secondary colors: these are colors that can be made with two primary colors – green (blue and yellow), orange (yellow and red) and purple (red and blue).
Colors can also be defined as analogous and complementary. Analogous colors sit right next to each other on the color wheel, like purple and blue or yellow and orange. These combinations typically clash when not arranged correctly. However, the second option– complementary colors – do exactly what their name suggest: they complement one another. Some examples include blue and yellow, or green and red.
Of course, there’s no accounting for personal preference! Mix whatever colors you like best.
How to Decorate Around Your New Paint Color
When it comes to picking out decor and furniture, you should consider what color combinations you prefer, but also what shades and hues would work well. For instance, a strong color accent wall might look best with lighter hued furniture next to it. Conversely, you can add depth to lighter walls with darker colors. Again, it’s all a matter of taste and preference.
You can also explore different design trends to further inform your decision. Some popular trends right now include natural-looking furniture and decor, curves and waves, bold accent pieces, and lots and lots of potted plants. Following some of these trends can help you hone in on the right colors for your paint color.
The possibilities really are endless when it comes to showing off your new space. The most important thing is that it feels like home and fits your unique style.
