How To Caulk A Shower
Sam Lutz • April 19, 2016

Caulking is not exactly rocket science, and that's a good thing. Caulking can be done by a motivated DIYer who has little or no prior experience with a caulk gun. In this tutorial, we'll lay out the step-by-step process for caulking your shower, so you can take on this task with confidence.
Materials
- Caulk removal tools
- Shower cleaner
- Sponge or rag
- Silicone caulk
- Caulk gun
- Caulk smoother tool
Process
- Use the caulk removal tools to scrape away the old caulk from your shower. Caulk removal tools come in different sizes and shapes for different circumstances. When choosing a caulk removal tool for your shower, you'll need a tool (or several tools) that will reach the caulk found in the spaces where two walls meet, and in the spaces between shower tiles. You'll also need a removal tool that won't damage the tile or shower surround in your bathroom, so be careful not to choose anything with a pointy tool that's too sharp. When removing the old caulk, you'll have to use a combination of tools and may have to spend some time peeling the old caulk off with your fingers.
- Clean the shower with cleaner and a fresh rag. Remove all the flakes of old caulk that you scraped away with the caulk removal tool.
- Load the caulk gun. This is a multi-step process that starts with clipping off the tip of the tube of caulk. You can do this with a utility knife, or you can do it by inserting the end of the tube into the spout cutter on the caulk gun and squeezing the trigger. Once this is done, use the folding metal stick on the caulk gun to puncture the seal inside the tip of the caulk gun. Finally, insert the caulk tube into the gun and depress the trigger until caulk comes out. You can watch a video of this process online: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnZmYW-P8wU
- Practice with the caulk gun. Do this on a disposable surface like on the inside of a box. Proceed to step 5 when you're confidence in your ability to caulk the shower with skill.
- Apply caulk to the areas of the shower that need to be caulked. When applying the caulk to the shower, remember to apply it slowly and at an even pace.
- Use the caulk smoother to smooth the caulk and press it deep into the space where the caulk has been applied.
- Allow the caulk to dry for the amount of time specified on the caulk tube.
