Home Improvement Projects for 2018
Sam Lutz • January 2, 2018
As 2018 rolls in, it’s time to decide which DIY projects will increase your property’s value and also improve your quality of life this coming year. Getting started early will help you make the most of your valuable time. These four home improvement plans are excellent projects to consider.
Refinish the Deck
Resealing or repainting can prevent rot and decay from ruining your deck. Decks need to be resealed every few years to ensure complete protection. If you’re not sure whether or not your deck needs to be resealed, first spray it with a light mist, then check whether the water is absorbed into the wood. If the water beads up on the surface of the deck, this is a sure sign that the wood needs resealing.
If your deck is painted rather than stained, you’ll know it’s time to repaint when the old paint begins to bubble or flake off. To get started, you’ll need either a can of paint or stain, depending on what you prefer to use. Clean and repair the deck first, sand where necessary, then apply stain or paint over the old protective coat.
Spruce Up the Garage
Cleaning and organizing your garage is a great way to make more storage space in your home. Every garage is different, so you’ll need to decide for yourself the best ways to make the space more usable. A few suggestions include:
- Install shelves to make storage space.
- Hang bikes from the ceiling to make room on the floor.
- Repaint the walls to make the space look cleaner, lighter and more inviting.
- Clean the floor and remove oil spills, then repaint or reseal the concrete as necessary.
Organize and Reduce Clutter
Organizing and reducing clutter in the home is a great way to make your living space seem more spacious. Modular storage can help organize closets, while built-in storage shelves look best in spaces like the living room and dining room. If you’re paying a contractor to install shelves in your home, you can save money by doing the painting yourself.
Repaint a Room
Repainting a room can make the space appear more tidy and pleasant. Repainting is also a great way to hide scuff marks and everyday wear and tear. Picking the right color is so important. To make this easier, paint samples on the wall before making a final selection. Once you’ve picked the right paint for your home, clean the walls with a microfiber cloth and make repairs with spackling. Move all furniture out of the room, or cover the furniture with tarps to prevent splatters from ruining the upholstery. Following these basic suggestions can help ensure that the finished project will be beautiful.
