Winter is nearly here. With the weather outside turning colder, now is the perfect time to take on the indoor paint projects that may have been accumulating in your home over the last year. At Ace Paint and Unfinished Furniture, we recommend tackling your touch up projects before the start of the holidays. Touching up the paint in your home before guests arrive can help you make your house look its best for your visitors.
Gather the Right Materials
The type of materials you’ll need to do touch ups will depend on the state of your walls. However, in general the materials below are helpful to have on hand:
- Tarps
- Brushes
- Paint roller
- Spackling
- Paint scraper
- Sandpaper
- Paint
The paint itself is the most critical tool for doing touch ups. The best way to make your touch ups match the room is to use the original leftover paint. However, paint doesn’t last forever and if the paint is old enough, it may have gone bad. To find out if the leftover paint is still useable, open the can and inspect the paint. Paint that has a strange odor, visible mold or chunks of solids floating around in the liquid is not suitable for use on your walls. If the paint is no longer useable, stop in at Ace Paint and Unfinished Furniture for materials.
Prep the Wall and the Room
Before you can do touch ups, you’ll first need to prep the surface. This is a multi-step process that may vary from wall to wall.
- Lay down tarps and move furniture.
Laying down tarps can prevent accidents from ruining your floors and furniture. If you can, move furniture out of the way to protect it during your paint touch up process.
- Clean the wall.
Start by cleaning the wall with a dry rag to clean away dust and dirt. For parts of the wall that cannot be cleaned in this way, dip the rag in warm soapy water.
- Make small repairs to the area of the wall that needs to be painted.
Fill any holes in the wall with spackling, then scrape down the spackling until it is even with the surface of the wall. Wait for the spackling to dry. If the spackling is still uneven after drying, use light-grit sandpaper to sand down the spackling.
Do Touch Ups As Needed
Once the wall has been cleaned, dried and repaired, the next step in the process is to perform touch ups as needed. Thin the paint by 10 or 15 percent to slow the wicking process. This prevents the paint from being absorbed into the wall too quickly and helps ensure that the new coat of paint will match the old coat of paint.
To apply the paint to the wall, use the same paint tool that you used to apply the original coat. In other words, if you used a brush to apply the paint before, use a brush now. If you used a roller to apply the original paint, use a roller again. This will help ensure that the two layers of paint will match.
