Tips and Tricks to Painting your Ceilings
Sam Lutz • February 6, 2018
Ceiling painting may not be the most enjoyable activity in the world, but with the right tools and painting methods, ceiling painting can take less time and yield attractive results. These tips will help you paint your ceiling with as little time and trouble as possible.
Choose the Right Materials
Painting a ceiling requires basic painting tools like quality paint brushes, tarps, blue painter’s tape and paint trays. A few special tools you’ll need include:
- Ceiling paint: This product is a flat paint that produces fewer splatters than standard paint. Ceiling paint also takes longer to dry than standard wall paint, to make blending easier.
- Extension poles for rollers: Unless they’re really necessary, avoid extra long handles, which can get heavy during the painting process. Check the length of the handles before starting your project to ensure they’re long enough to reach the tallest point on your ceiling.
- Nappy roller: This is critical for popcorn or textured ceilings.
- Baseball cap: You will be splattered with paint during your project, so protect your hair with a hat.
- Tall ladder: Don’t try to paint a ceiling with a dinky step stool. Get a real ladder that enables you to get close up to your ceiling if need be.
If you’re painting your ceiling because of a stain from a roof leak, don’t forget to apply stain-blocking primer to prepare your ceiling.
Protect Everything In the Room
It’s basically impossible to paint a ceiling without producing splatters, so cover everything you possibly can with tarp. Move whatever you can out of the room to avoid staining your furniture.
Give Yourself Adequate Time
Painting a ceiling is an all-weekend project, so give yourself enough time to finish the project. This ensures that you’ll do a good job and will prevent you from cutting corners at the end.
Cut In, Roll, Repeat
“Cutting in” is the process of painting the edges of the room with an angled paint brush. When you’re ready to start painting, cut in a portion of the room’s perimeter with an angled paint brush, then paint the middle with a roller. When that entire section of the room has been painted, cut in another section of the room and then paint the middle with a roller. Keep doing this until the entire room has been painted.
