Your kitchen is an essential part of your home. No matter how busy your life is, or how often you choose to eat out, the kitchen will always be one of the main focal points of your home. Whether you use it to brew a quick cup of coffee in the morning, or make hearty, nutritious meals for your family in the evening, nobody likes an ugly kitchen!
Choosing the Right Color
This may seem like an easy task, but it can be one that keeps homeowners up at night. It’s too easy to sit at home watching HGTV all weekend and also think of several different ideas for your kitchen based on the hottest trends you’re seeing on TV. When in doubt, however, go with a warmer color. Shades of red are a common go-to for homeowners looking to really make their kitchen pop.
It’s also important to consider other things, such as the colors in the surrounding areas, cabinets, backsplashes, etc. The warmer the color, the more it will pop. However, neutral shades of gray and blue are also very versatile. And when used correctly, can really make a kitchen look very clean and modern.
Preparation is Key
Whether you’re painting a bedroom, bathroom, garage door or your kitchen, preparation is important. Here’s a few non-negotiables to consider when painting your kitchen:
- Relocate the kitchen furniture
- Dust the walls and give them a good scrub with a laundry detergent water mixture
- Repair any random imperfections (Most can be fixed with a bit of sandpaper and some muscle)
- Choose a high-quality primer to help cover up any imperfections
- Grab some paint brushes, stirring sticks, a paint tray, and a few rollers
- Cover the wall trim with painter’s tape
Now that you’ve got that out of the way, it’s time for the fun part.
Time to Paint
After you’ve completed the prep work, start with a coat of high quality primer. Once the primer dries you’re ready to paint. This is the fun part, but also the tricky part. You must paint the corners first, and then move on to the ceiling borders with a small brush.
Now that you’ve got those pesky corners and borders out of the way, it gets a bit easier. Grab your roller and begin painting.
One great tip we tell our customers is to paint a “W” on the wall and then fill it in with the roller. Doing this allows you to be certain you’re not missing any spots, and that you’re applying the same amount of paint to each section. That’s important.
If you’re going from a dark color to a light color, applying a second coat is a good idea.
Just follow these steps and you’ll be sitting in a kitchen you love in no time.
