These Paint Colors Can Lift Your Mood

Whether you’re painting your entire home or just a room or two, you might want to consider more than just the aesthetics of your color palette. Different colors can alter your mood, making you feel invigorated, calmed, inspired or soothed depending on their tone and shade. Color psychology has been used by many to make restaurants more appetizing, companies more trustworthy and, yes, homes more inviting. Here are a few of the more popular colors and their benefits.
Emeralds and Greens: Tranquility and Health
Have you ever heard of the “green room” that they keep actors and personalities in before they need to hit the spotlight? There’s a psychological reason behind that. Pale greens, emeralds and teals
are considered to be restful shades, eliminating stress and lowering blood pressure. When mixed with a little yellow, green becomes bright and cheerful. When mixed with a bit of blue, it becomes calmer and more relaxed. Either way, it’s the perfect color for any room that you and your family want to unwind in. Family rooms, reading rooms and even bedrooms will become a calming, stress-free zone.
Emeralds and Greens: Tranquility and Health
White and cream has been the default shade of many homes for a reason: it’s neutral, soothing and clean. People tend to relax in a white or cream room and it’s neutral enough that it goes with any other color on the palette. Lighter shades of white will open up small rooms while darker shades of cream will make larger rooms feel cozy or rustic. But don’t go too sterile with it. Pure white is often seen as harsh and restrictive, the difficulty of cleaning it notwithstanding. A softer shade, such as Benjamin Moore’s Elmira White, will be less taxing on both the eyes and the duster.

Light and Dark Blues: Productive and Efficient
If you’ve got an office you need to paint, light blue is going to be your best friend. Accent walls in darker blue
(or trim!) will also jazz up any neutrally colored room. Apart from being the favorite color of many people, it is considered one of the most “professional” or “trustworthy” colors. There’s a reason why blue is featured so often in corporate documents and branding. Blue is a motivational color perceived as sincere, forthright and direct. A blue office is certain to keep your mind on task.
Lilac and Lavender: Relaxing and Calming
Shades of lilac and lavender
are ideal for spa-style master bathrooms and bedrooms, provoking a feeling of both relaxation and calm. You may have noticed that many spas, massage parlors and salons are painted in a lovely shade of pale lavender. Darker purple accents are seen as the colors of sophistication and wealth, ideal for entry rooms, dining rooms and living rooms.
Still not sure? Don’t forget that everyone is unique. Though most people have these innate reactions to colors, you might have a different style altogether. Start by picking up some paint swatches
and evaluating how you feel when you look at each color and shade. Ask yourself if that’s how you want to feel every time you walk into your room. When you find the right color, you’ll know!
