Spooky and Creative Halloween Paint Projects
Sam Lutz • October 25, 2016

Halloween will be here soon! Now is the time to break out craft projects and decorate your home with homemade decor. These seven paint projects will keep you and your kids busy on rainy days and chilly nights, as you wait for Halloween to arrive.
Black Pumpkin Diorama
Purchase an artificial carving pumpkin from a local craft supply store. Cut a large hole in the front of the pumpkin, then paint the outside and inside of the pumpkin black using black spray paint. Inside the pumpkin create a Halloween scene using construction paper, artificial plants, stones, figurines, dolls, and other little objects.
The exact scene you choose you make will depend on the materials you have at home. Dollhouse furniture and dolls are good for this type of project. You can create an image of a witch working over a cauldron, a wolf howling at the moon, or a ghost in a graveyard. For a good example of what a pumpkin diorama looks like, check out this website.
Spider Tablecloth
Take a solid white, solid orange or solid black tablecloth, then use fabric paint to stencil spiders running across the surface of the table. You can make as many or as few spiders as you want. To add an extra level of intrigue and visual interest, paint a spider web in each corner.
Pumpkin Bottles
Collect some old milk or juice bottles. Clean them out well, then coat the inside with orange paint and let the paint dry. On the outside of each bottle, paint pumpkin faces using black or yellow paint. Finally, paint the tops of the bottles green.
You can vary this project by making the bottles into ghosts (using white and black paint), witches (using green and black paint), or Frankensteins (using green and black paint).
Spider, Witch or Pumpkin Napkins
For this project, you’ll use fabric paint to stencil images of spiders onto cloth napkins. This is the perfect companion project to the “spider tablecloth” craft described above. As a variation of this, you can also paint an image of a ghost or witch onto the napkins.

Baby Foot Ghosts
If you have a baby or a toddler, this project is cute and easy to pull off. Paint the bottom of your baby’s foot with white paint, then make a white footprint on a piece of black construction paper. Turn the foot upside down and you have a ghost! Finally, paint the word “boo” on the construction paper for effect.
Spider Hands
This is a variation of the ghost feet project. Paint your child’s hand (all except the thumb) with black paint, then instruct your child to make a handprint on a piece of white or orange construction paper. The palm of the hand represents the spider’s body, and the four fingers are four of the spider’s legs.
Paint your child’s other hand using the same process, then have your child place another handprint on the paper. Make the palms of the two handprints overlap, while the fingers of two the handprints point in opposite directions to form eight distinct legs. Paint eyes on the spider's body and you're done!
Halloween Furniture
Paint an old step stool or rocking chair with black paint, then use white or orange paint to stencil images of ghosts, pumpkins, and spiders across the surface of the furniture. Place this piece of furniture on your front stoop with other Halloween props on Halloween night.

One of the wonderful things about good wood furniture is that it doesn’t have to be merely functional. It can be beautiful as well. We’ve seen some amazing pieces made with wood stains that are more than just furniture, they’re works of art. So if you’ve got an old table, desk or other piece of wood furniture that needs jazzed up, why don’t you consider using some of our great stains to try one of these ideas.
