Six Fabulous Painting Projects for This Fall
Sam Lutz • September 20, 2016

Fall is a time for crafts! In this post, we’ll discuss six fabulous painting projects that you can use to decorate your dining room table or living room at Halloween or Thanksgiving. Most of these projects can easily be completed in an afternoon, given the right tools and a sense of fun.
Painted Leaves
Go for a walk in your neighborhood and collect 10 or 20 stiff, thick-skinned leaves. These leaves don’t have to have beautiful coloring, but they do need to have durable skin and an attractive shape. Use metallic spray paint to color your leaves in a hue that matches your décor. Paint the leaves first on one side, then on the other, allowing the paint to dry in between coats. Use these leaves to scatter around a centerpiece or to decorate an empty table top.
Painted Vases
Painted vases are very popular! Simply purchase a glass vase from a local dollar store, then use blue painter’s tape to cover parts of the vase that you don’t wish to be painted. Arrange the painter’s tape in stripes, swirls or another pattern. Use metallic gold, silver or copper spray paint to paint the vase, then fill the vase up with autumn-colored beads, acorns or pine cones.
Monogrammed Pumpkins
Instead of carving pumpkins this year, paint them with monograms. Use brown, red, green or orange acrylic paint to paint your pumpkins with monograms that correspond to the names of family members and pets.
Painted Wine Glasses
You’ll need special glass paint for this project. Paint the wine glasses that you’ll be using at Thanksgiving. Adorn your wine glasses with iconic images like pumpkins, leaves and acorns. Remember to practice on a flat surface before attempting to paint the wine glasses themselves, as this will help assure that you’re satisfied with the image.
Painted Acorns
Go to a park and collect acorns, pinecones or both. Like the leaves you painted, you won’t need to pick specimens that have beautiful colors, just specimens that have the right shape. Once you’ve got the right acorns and pine cones for you, use a can of spray paint to spray down the items you’ve collected, or you can paint the items using paint brushes. Just keep in mind that using paint brushes will allow you to paint in great detail, while using spray paint will allow you to get even coverage in one single color. Once you’ve painted your fall items, use them to decorate the table, mantel or window sills of your home.
Painted Gourds

Gourds are shaped just like faces! Use paintbrushes to paint silly faces on gourds and squash purchased from the local market. Paint with acrylic paint for the sake of longevity and colorfastness. When putting your painted gourds on display, keep them out of the sun and put them somewhere cool, to prevent them from rotting.
