Paint A Kid’s Room They Can Grow Into
Sam Lutz • August 9, 2016

Nobody wants to paint their child’s bedroom every few years just to meet their child’s changing needs. When painting your child’s bedroom, you can avoid this problem by selecting a color that your child will enjoy for a long time. In this post, we’ll discuss the complicated art of picking paint colors and designs that your child will enjoy from the early years through the teens.
Pick a Flexible Neutral
Neutral colors are typically identified as brown, gray, beige, khaki or cream. These colors are flexible in that they can easily be paired with different accent colors like red, green, blue, yellow and so on.
What’s the benefit? Imagine that your daughter is 5 years old and she likes pink and purple best of all the colors. If you paint her bedroom in a light gray paint with white trim, you can easily decorate her room with a pink bedspread, white dresser, and a lavender dresser set. All of these colors will match one another easily.
…now imagine your daughter is 15 years old, and she likes the color navy. Those same light gray walls with white trim will look very tasteful when paired with a navy bedspread, navy pillows, and so on.
Paint a Chalkboard Wall
When your child is young, a chalkboard wall can be a fun drawing tool and plaything. When your child gets older, this chalkboard wall may become an important mode of expression, or even a surface on which your child can write to-do lists.
Choose an Easy-to-Clean Paint
Paints come in different types and finishes, ranging from matte, which feels slightly porous and rough, to high-gloss, which is smooth and reflective. Different types of paints will respond to dirt, crayon marks and scuff marks in different ways.
You can make life easy for yourself by selecting an easy to clean paint that will stand up to years of abuse from a little one. Some parents naturally assume that shiny paints like semi-gloss will be easier to clean, because they’re so smooth. However, some glossy paints tend to lose their shine when cleaned repeatedly. Consumer Reports recommends choosing a satin paint, which resists staining.
Paint an Accent Wall
Your 7 year old may desperately want to paint his or her room a garish shade of orange right now, but this will change when your child ages. As a compromise, try painting an accent wall of your child’s choosing. One accent wall will be easier to paint instead of the whole room, and your child will be able to feel like he or she had control over the way the bedroom was decorated.
Go Wacky On the Ceiling
Children and teens alike can get on board with an interesting pattern or design on the ceiling of their bedroom. If your child likes to think outside the box, try painting a pattern of circles, squares or swirls on your child’s ceiling. A unique, fun design may last your child well into his or her teen years.
