Are you looking for some last minute Christmas ideas for a family member, loved one or significant other? Create furniture that looks beautiful and lasts for years. Nothing says “Happy Holidays” more than a beautiful chair, hand-painted, glazed and decorated by you.
Choose the Right Piece
Consignment shops and furniture stores are both good sources for sturdy wooden furniture. Whether you’re using bare furniture or older furniture that needs refinishing, the final results will still be beautiful.
If you’re planning to fix an older chair, look it over well and make a list of what you’ll need to make repairs. Wood filler can fill nail holes, scratches and other problems. Use nails or screws to stabilize a wobbly chair. Wood glue can keep chair spokes and other parts in place. A microfiber cloth will be necessary to clean the chair. Finally, don’t forget sandpaper, which will be necessary to rough up the old finish or paint.
Prep the Furniture
Bare furniture is usually ready to glaze or paint immediately, so you can skip this step if you’ve purchased new naked furniture. If you purchased older furniture that needs to be refinished, do the following:
- Fill nail holes and gouges with wood filler. Allow the wood filler to dry, then sand until it is flush with the rest of the furniture.
- Glue, nail or screw any loose pieces until the chair is completely stable and does not wobble.
- Rough up the existing finish with sandpaper.
- Use a microfiber cloth to wipe the chair clean.
Paint or Glaze
Once the chair has been fully prepped, use a paint brush to apply paint or glaze. You can also use a small paint roller on the flat surfaces of the chair, like the seat. A paint roller is an expedient tool to use and has the advantage of not leaving brush marks, but whether or not you choose to use a roller is up to you. Allow the chair to fully dry before applying a second coat. You’ll be able to tell if the chair is dry by whether or not it is tacky to the touch.
Decorate the Chair
Need decorating ideas? We found
plenty of ideas online. If the chair is for a spouse or significant other, we recommend wrapping a bow around the back and dangling mistletoe from the ribbon. If the chair is for a parent or an older relative, drape it with a solid white table runner and lay a pillow down on top of the runner. If the chair is for a younger relative (a child), set a small stuffed animal on the chair, and place a bow on the seat next to the stuffed animal.
