Colorful Thanksgiving Crafts For Kids
Sam Lutz • November 7, 2017
Halloween may be over, but Thanksgiving is on the way! Now is the perfect time to start working on fun Thanksgiving crafts with your kids. In this post, we’ll talk about three, fabulous Thanksgiving crafts that you can do with your little ones this November.
Pumpkin Turkey
Materials:
- Red and yellow construction paper
- Brown felt
- Safety scissors
- Googly eyes
- Feathers
- Glue
- Skewers
- Mini pumpkin
This project
will make good use the mini pumpkins you’ve had laying around your house since Halloween. To start, cut the brown felt into a peanut shape. The top half of the peanut will be the turkey’s head, the bottom half will be the neck. Help your child cut out a yellow triangle for the beak, and a red, oval-shaped wattle. Glue the beak and wattle into place on the turkey’s head, then glue googly eyes over the beak. Set the felt aside to dry.
Use the skewers to poke holes in the top of one side of the mini pumpkin, then dip the tips of the feathers into glue and insert the feathers into the holes so that they stick up and out of the back of the pumpkin. When the feathers are securely in place, and the glue is dry, glue the head into place on the front half of the pumpkin. This project is the perfect centerpiece for your Thanksgiving feast!
Fall Leaf Turkeys
Materials:
- Googly eyes
- 2 leaves of the same shape
- Yellow construction paper
- Red construction paper or one small red leaf
- Glue
Start this project off by taking a fun nature walk with your toddler-age or older child. Look for two leaves of the same shape. Each leaf should have a nice long stem. Maple leaves tend to be the right shape for this project, but you can use any leaves that you find attractive. If you happen to find a small red leaf for the turkey’s wattle while you’re out, take that home as well!
At home, glue the two leaves together so that one is aligned over the other. Position the stems so they’re side by side at the bottom. In this project, the leaves will form the body, and the stems will form the legs.
Glue googly eyes in the center of the leaf. Cut a yellow triangle out of the construction paper, then glue that triangle into the center of the turkey just below the eyes. If you did not find a red leaf for the wattle, cut out the triangle-shaped wattle from the red construction paper. Glue the wattle into place beside the break.
Coffee Filter Turkeys
Materials:
- Brown, red and yellow construction paper
- Safety scissors
- Googly eyes
- Coffee filter
- Washable markers
- Paintbrush
- Glue
These cute turkeys make nice wall decorations and cool refrigerator magnets! This is a good craft for children ages around 5 years old and up. Some kids will need more help cutting and gluing than others.
To get started, help your child cut out a peanut-shaped piece of brown construction paper. This will serve as the body of the turkey. Help your child cut out yellow triangles for the beak and feet, and a red, oval-shaped wattle. Glue the feet, beak, and wattle into place, and glue googly eyes over the beak.
To make the feathers, fold the coffee filter into fourths, and then cut out a quarter section along the folds. Decorate the coffee filter with washable markers, and lightly drip the filter with water from a paintbrush to run the colors together. When the coffee filter has dried, glue the feathers into place behind the body.
