Chalk It Up – Chalkboard Ideas That’s Not Your Walls
Sam Lutz • September 19, 2017
Chalkboard paint is useful in a million different ways, and not just for walls! Whether you’re trying to make an outdoor chalkboard
or a creative system for labeling wine glasses, chalkboard paint can help. This post will go over some of our favorite ways to use chalkboard paint.
Jar Labels
Jars tend to be multipurpose: first, they’re used, for one thing, then another. So when it’s time to put a label on your jars, why not make the label multi purpose? Painting labels on your jars is an easy way to ensure that your jar’s labels can be used and reused as needed.
To complete this project, simply scratch the surface with steel wool before applying the paint, or prime the surface of the jar with glass primer to ensure that the chalkboard paint will stay in place. Use painter’s tape to establish the space where you’d like the label to be. And of course, give the paint time to dry before using it.
Potted Plants
Clay planters are the perfect surface for painting with chalkboard paint because clay easily absorbs paint. To do this project, clean the surface of the planter well before applying the paint. Give the paint adequate time to dry before applying the second coat. When you’re done, label the surface of the planter to identify the plants being grown inside!
Framed Custom Quotes
Framed custom quotes can set the mood in any room of your home. To make a framed custom quote, paint a piece of scrap wood with chalkboard paint, then write the quote on the wood when the paint is dry. For the finishing touch, frame the piece of wood and put it on your wall.
Wine Glass Stems
People are always forgetting which wine glass is theirs. With chalkboard paint, you won’t have that problem! To finish this project, dip the base of the stem with chalkboard paint and give it time to dry. When the project is finished, you can use chalk to label who has which wine glass at your next event. Dresser Labels
Little kid dressers are always getting disorganized. With chalkboard paint, you can stop that from happening. Paint the dresser, then use chalk to label which types of clothes are kept in which section of the dresser. You can read more about this process in our old blog post on the subject.
Refrigerator Art
By painting your refrigerator with chalkboard paint, you give your kids a way to make art directly on the surface of the refrigerator. To complete this project, you’ll need to clean the fridge, remove the handles, unplug the appliance, remove the food, sand down the surface of the fridge, then prime it and paint it. This can be time-consuming, so be prepared. If you want the refrigerator to be magnetic, use a magnetic primer underneath the chalkboard paint.
Headboard Decor
Are you stuck with a boring old headboard? Now you can make it fancy and beautiful with chalk! Simply clean the surface, tape off the sections that you’d like to paint, sand down the wood, apply primer and then apply chalkboard paint. Don’t forget that chalkboard paint comes in a variety of colors, so you can match the color of your headboard to the color of your room.
